German Shepherd vs Shiba Inu
Side-by-side comparison: lifespan, size, temperament, grooming and health.
The Shiba Inu outlives the German Shepherd by roughly 4 years: a Japanese cemetery-data review recorded a 15.5-year life expectancy for Shibas — the highest of any breed — and the 2024 UK study found 14.6 years, versus 9–13 years (median 10–11) for German Shepherds. Size drives much of the gap: large breeds live roughly 20% shorter lives than small breeds (11.9 vs 12.7 years in the UK study). The breeds suit opposite owners: the GSD needs daily work and training, while the independent Shiba needs secure fencing and patient socialization.
